Phoenix hosts the 2018 AFJ national conference Sept. 25 - 30, 2018
There is nothing dry about the week AFJ has planned for you in Phoenix this September. Our conference committee has crafted an agenda featuring skill-sharpening sessions like Ethics in Food Writing, a conversation between James Beard Award-winning authors (and AFJ members) J.M. Hirsch and Hanna Raskin. Gain insight into Native cultures and foodways in a session featuring Freddie Bitsoie (Diné) executive chef at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and Twila Cassadore (San Carlos Apache), a traditional foods preservationist and evangelist, moderated by Shaliyah Ben (Navajo), director of public programs at the Heard Museum. Donna Battle Pierce will discuss the Secrets to Cookbook Success with Nancie McDermott and James Beard Award-winner Andrea Nguyen. Be sure to check out the complete list of 2018 AFJ conference speakers.
This year, we have worked closely with our partners at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to develop programmatic content. Sessions on Friday take place at the Cronkite, featuring several of the school's award-winning faculty and staff. Recognized as one of the top journalism schools in the United States, Cronkite is also home to "Arizona PBS, the largest media outlet operated by a journalism school in the world."
Thanks to our generous sponsors, events highlighting the culinary and cultural delights of Phoenix and its surrounding communities complete our learning experience. Kick off the conference at a private reception Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Musical Instrument Museum. Stroll through the Desert Botanical Garden for a mixology session featuring the prickly pear cactus and a garden-to-table lunch. Feast on small bites at DeSoto Central Market and wrap the conference with an evening at Lon's at The Hermosa Inn, showcasing Scottsdale's freshest flavors. Extend your stay and join the overnight excursion to Tucson, the first American city to receive the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designation as a City of Gastronomy.
