About the AFJ

AFJ is a professional organization dedicated to preserving and perpetuating responsible food journalism across media platforms.

Forty years after its founding, the newly invigorated group is as passionate as ever about helping members adapt to and excel in the rapidly changing field. While their backgrounds and platforms may vary, AFJ members share the same goal: To learn and grow together as professionals in the rapidly changing and expanding world of food journalism.

Today, members meet yearly at the associations annual conference to discuss regional and national trends and history in food. In recent years the AFJ has traveled to Park City, Memphis, Seattle and will hold their annual conference in Philadelphia in 2017.

AFJ was founded in 1974 and is proud of its history of professionalism and high ethical standards, recently chronicled in Gastronomica. Forty years later, the newly invigorated group is as passionate as ever about helping members adapt to and excel in the rapidly changing field.

While we continue to uphold our professional standards — for instance, members still do not advertise or promote specific food-related businesses — we have broadened our membership requirements to include freelancers as well as full-time staffers. We have a relatively new student membership category, and are looking to establish one for academics. We want our group to be as diverse and vibrant as food itself.

While their backgrounds and platforms may vary, AFJ members share the same goal: To learn and grow together as professionals in the rapidly changing and expanding world of food journalism.
